-You will learn about methods of harvesting your own flax

-We will discuss harvest methods across scale

-We will Harvest flax at Hawk & Handsaw Farm together

-You will get to use hand tools to process your own flax strick using traditional methods

-Demonstrations on spinning and other techniques will be shared

Our Flax Workshop series invites you to come along with us on a journey through the stages of Fiber Flax. These hands on learning opportunities will be led by over a decade of experience in small scale flax growing and an intimate knowledge of the industry as it stands, the history of flax, the skills needed to transform the flax plant into fiber.

Kidder and Tracy will share their knowledge on how you can grow your own flax and and show you how to process this plant. Each Workshop will highlight a different aspect of Flax Processing as we move through the season. Come Join the Flax Fiber Movement and learn all about this fantastic plant that humans have used for thousands of years!

During this first workshop, “Harvesting Flax, The Great Pull”, you will participate in the next steps of flax processing, The Harvest! We will discuss the range of harvest methods at different scales from home gardening to industrial levels. we will discuss seed saving of Flax and its not so straight forwardness as well as storage options and what comes next.

Kidder & Tracy will share about their grant funded Flax research projects and their efforts in reviving the flax industry in North America.

Hands on Experience will include: harvesting Flax on the farm and working with last years flax crop to hand process raw flax into line fiber.

Demos will be shared by tracy on how to spin and work with flax line fiber as well!

Our Sliding Scale Options:

We offer three payment options: Recommended, Reduced and Restorative. Our Recommended option reflects what it takes to cover costs. The Reduced option is for community members who would not be able to attend events without an affordable option, while the Restorative option covers costs and supports greater event access.

Finding yourself on the sliding scale…

Consider paying lower on the scale if you:

  • Have significant debt, medical expenses, or educational expenses

  • Are supporting children or other dependents

  • Have immigration-related expenses

  • Have low or inconsistent income

Consider paying higher on the scale if you:

  • Own your home, have investments, retirement accounts, or inherited money

  • Travel recreationally, work part-time by choice, or have access to family money and resources

  • Have a relatively high degree of earning power due to your level of education, gender or racial privilege, and/or class background, even if you are not currently exercising your earning power
